Torrance

Torrance is a Los Angeles County city boasting 1.5 miles of beaches facing the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Its balmy coastal setting combined with unparalleled ocean views, a pleasant year-round climate, and refreshing sea breezes has helped its population grow to more than 147,000 since its incorporation in 1921.

History

The city is named after real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance, who spearheaded the area’s development as a mixed industrial-residential community during the early 1900s. The territory used to belong to Rancho San Pedro, the pioneer California land grant from which other South Bay cities like Redondo Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach were formed.

Throughout the 20th century, the local economy was driven by agriculture, along with the petroleum and manufacturing industries. A new wave of housing developments attracted new generations of Torrance homeowners following World War II.
